As Paul Krugman has been explaining for years, this is the central issue and need. "Deficit first" is counterproductive. But this fact is not news. It is old hat, old wisdom. Beyond that, is the known fact that wages are depressed, which deepens the problem. Greed at the top has not been rewarded without a very severe price to the entire economy. Union busting over decades has inflicted damage second only to the job losses themselves. We must honor workers' needs and aspirations. Jobs alone will not heal our ailing economy.

And until those jobs are created? Low wage workers are a single job loss from losing everything, with no way to get back up. Getting a new job takes longer than ever. With the job gone, too many will quickly no longer have a home address, phone, clean clothes/bath, bus fare -- with no way to secure another job. It's not uncommon for people to run out of UI (if they were able to get it in the first place) before they can secure another job. This is simply the reality in a country that has seen a massive number of jobs shipped out. That is why a legitimate safety net, a citizen's entitlement to basic poverty relief, is necessary. The more advanced nations understand this.
