Since Clinton, the issue of American poverty has virtually been censored out of the public discussion. We should consider the consequences of (for example) using the poor to create a subminimum wage/no rights replacement workforce, or even the consequences of cutting the rungs off of the proverbial ladder out of poverty. Might even consider how and why it isn't possible to save the middle class without shoring up the poor. It's getting difficult not to consider that there might be some correlation between the shrinking of the middle class and the growth of those in deep poverty since Clinton took a machete to the safety net. If America should ever experience a hiccup of humanitarianism, we might question the value of a welfare "reform" that has resulted in significantly increased infant mortality rates among the poor, as well as a life expectancy for our poor that has fallen below that of some Third World nations.

If I hear one more time that social security has anything to do with this fiasco I swear I'm going to vomit! What is the matter with people? Are they so hopelessly stupid that they can't differrentiate between SS and the general fund? It is so reminiscent of the infamous WMDs of the Bush administration: If the dumbed-down, coprporate media keeps saying the same untrhuth time after time then it is taken as the truth. Even our illustrious Pres. says the same thing. Yikes! there is no hope!

This generation desperately needs a legitimate progressive discussion/movement. Look what we have -- MSNBC, for example, with its Clinton-style "new Democrats" promoting regressive socio-economic policies, taking a bold (???) stand to protect the status quo of the bourgeoisie. That's as bold as taking a firm stand for fresh air and milk. We have print media that makes a feeble attempt to discuss America's grave economic issues while (irrationally) avoiding all mention of the poor (much less, of the policies that crush people into permanent poverty and steadily pull more of the middle into poverty). Today's bold political movement consists of standing up and shouting "U-rah-rah for the better off!" This isn't the first time when the richest few had a dangerous degree of power over govt. Historically, the poor and middle united to successfully push back, to the benefit of both. Not this time. The cowardice to face and openly discuss the realities of our failed social and economic agendas indicates that this generation will fail to save itself.

Why are these facts never fully laid out by our elected leaders? Why are the supposed left wing politicians playing the right wing game with just a few tweaks? I know they think it's political survival but I have to believe people are open to the truth if they get to hear it. We need a new major left wing political party. The GOP is imploding. That could be an opening.
