When Obama makes a "... turn to a progressive agenda ..." I will expect to look up and see some pigs flying by. Obama is, by nature and by his entire career, a conservative whose core beliefs are not significantly different than those of most in the Republican party. Look at his cabinet and advisors, look at the policies supported and implemented in his first term, look at his voting record as a senator. Those who expect Obama to be a progresssive or liberal are, sadly, very misinformed. He is almost surely a better president than McCain or Romney would have been, but a progressive? Not in this lifetime.

.....we are left with the true issue and true cliff.

The GOP and uber wealthy have the nation in a casino-economic headlock, and it is strangling the life out of our true "free market" system.

Obama's demands were purely symbolic--nothing more than crumbs from the table.

"Corporate Profits At All-time High, Wages As Percent of GDP, All-time Low"

.....if 70% of our economy is related to consumer demand, and average joe is the source of that demand and going deeper into long-term debt with flat and/or deteriorating wages, where is the fuel to run the engine going to come from ?

All this gnashing of teeth and proclamation of American pie versus socialism over a few Obama crumbs.

Our system requires balance--this may be symbolic but the fact is, we are going backwards, fast.

How much longer can we continue to fuel the slight economic growth seen with long-term consumer debt? That is the real bubble/cliff the nation should be discussing.

The only thing we are poised for is a long, long, long slog.

I think that mr. Ormsby made some good points; however there is one factor that I think that he may have overlooked, and that is most Americans are Attention Deficit Dunces. What I mean by that is by looking at the results of the last election yes the GOP's new wave called the Tea Party doesn't have as much sugar as it once did, but it won't be hard for them to come out with a new breed that will change its image just a bit in the up and coming elections to sucker the idiots back in, and we will be back to square one again. We are in the middle of a CIVIL CIVLI WAR this "Battle of the Fiscal Cliff" while it may have appeared to be a win for the people it is just a sucker punch that is going to hit us and weaken us more.

I hope that I am wrong.

This blog by Robert Borosage is one of the best yet! I nearly totally agree with the content. But let's don't forget the principals responsible for this continual debacle. First and foremost, is Barack Obama who is incompetent as a presidential leader. Secondly are those in the Senate, including John Boehner, Mitch McConnell and Harry Reid. We have a totally corrupt two party system in this country and if people don't recognize it soon and do something about it then we will fail like all other empires before. It ain't rocket science folks.

I think that the real test for President Obama will come in the next two months when the debt limit and the sequester rear their ugly heads. He can stand firm because if the Republicans are willing to shut down the government, and orchestrate massive cuts in defense and social programs, it will hopefully destroy their party once and for all. He has to call their bluff without making any meaningful concessions. I hope he has the guts to do this.
