Nicely said Richard. You captured the feeling of the moment. I think the President did a nice job yesterday at the event in Conn.
The question is really what to do in the face of this sadness. Today in DC there is a protest in a few minutes at NRA HQ. I think acting to make automatic and semi automatic weapons illegal is a good first step. Along with making sure that needed mental health care is more available in public programs.
What your column reflected well is the spiritual work that needs to be done, not just the political action.
There is a wonderful Steve Earle Christmas song that I keep singing to myself, "Nothing but a child."

I deplore the automatic calls for more gun-control. The problem is so much deeper, wider, older and more pervasive. The glorification of violence in video games and movies. The second-class status of women. Bullying and homophobia. The imprisonment of non-violent drug offenders and the disproportionate imprisonment of non-white people. War, and the brutalization it wreaks in the people who wage it. Glorification of greed and avarice, and impoverishment of the 98%. And so on, and on, and on. It's all connected, a web of injustice. The vilification of guns and gun-owners is a convenient red-herring or scapegoat, because it would be so hard to address these and other endemic problems in our nation.

[...] OurFuture.org’s Richard Eskow: “Last year in Africa I heard the story of a nine-year-old girl who took her own life rather than face the horrors in her village. Her voice has spoken to me ever since, informing the work of my days with the graphic immediacy of her experience. Now the children of Newtown speak to millions of us. For me the voice of Newtown will alway be the voice of that friend of a friend’s daughter. From now on she will always be a still, small voice in my life … Whatever your politics, I wish for you what I wish for myself: that we always hear the gentle whisper of the twenty small voices that were stilled last week in Newtown. We owe them that.” [...]
