Although I, as well as many others, didn't receive a COLA for 2 yrs., when we did we also got a letter from the state of Ohio stating that because we now had more money our Direction card allowance (food stamps to supplement very low income persons) would be reduced (by the COLA increase amt.) reason being we now had more $ to spend on food. We're talking about a little over $800. a month in S.S. The same is expected this year though gas, heating, housing, all living expenses have gone up. This was supposed to be a buffer against inflation, now it's gone and will continue to be. I volunteer every school day in a kindergarten where I help at risk children learn their alphabet, letter sounds, sight words and as the year progresses, their reading, in addition to tying shoes and putting on band aids, being with them in the cafeteria for lunch to help supervise and assist them with daily lessons and work papers, zipping jackets and helping them on with gloves and mittens and encouraging them and showing them affection (easiest thing I've ever done) I truly feel I contribute to my community every day as I dive home. I am old enough to remember the days that if you had a full time job you could expect a pension and medical benefits, those days are gone forever and soon will be the generations whom remember that, and, I'm afraid, young workers will think minimum wage and no benefits are the norm. All the people who wish to destroy a decent system like Social Security really have to do is wait for my and the generation behind me to die. How these fiends hide behind a cloak of pious religious values boggles my mind. Family Values are: honesty, thrift, loyalty,a work ethic, kindness, fairness, generosity, love, a sense of community, etc...but why should I go on? all these fine Christians in Congress should know this or risk being exposed as the Hippocrates that they are.
What troubling times we live in .

When I wasn't working, I had my first job at 15, I was a housewife and then became disabled, I watch every penny to live within my means as I feel I should as a responsible adult

Rather than raising the Medicare age for retirement, why not give an incentive for each year a person works past the age of retirement, like an accrued bonus paid at actual retirement.
The worker would be continuing to pay into Soc. Sec. but would not be drawing a benefit. This has to be a plus and is positive and leaves the choice of retirement age to the worker.

USA has the world's highest paid doctors, the world's most expensive hospitals, the world's most expensive drugs. This is because the health care industry operates like the defense industry on "cost +". There is no "free market" in health care. It is a government enforced and protected monopoly from A to Z. If our health care costs based upon national GNP were comparable to what they are in the rest of the developed world, we'd be paying a trillion dollars "less" a year for health care.
