The chief Republican negotiator, John Boehner, is in an untenable position. If he makes any effort to negotiate or compromise, other than repeating the unacceptable Grover Norquist demands, he will lose support from the billionaire class and their paid lackeys in the tea party, which includes a few dozen Congresspeople. If he refuses to compromise, the draconian budget cuts will take place, with large cuts in many types of spending, and tax increases for everyone. Boehner could help the country greatly by agreeing to work with the Democrats, but this could put his career in jeopardy. We'll see whether personal ambition or the country ends up being his bigger priority. Most of the rest, including the imbecile McConnell and the talking heads at Fox, is just noise that has little effect on anyone except the news organizations that are desperate for anything that can be portrayed as newsworthy. Currently about the only name in news that I pay any attention to is Jon Stewart at Comedy.

$250,000 “up” get tax increase. Opponents ploy the $250,000 number but no one ploys the 4000 Million Income “down”. Do incomes of 100 million to 4000 million deserve a tax cut or tax increase in hard times??
Bush Tax Cuts, Payroll Tax Cuts, Sequestred Spending cuts.
A great debate on each. No good solutions. People get hurt
on each. Result of tax cuts was more debt debt debt.
Spending cuts mean loss of jobs in federal government.
Each party is playing talk politics not common sense positive solutions.

Please send email like this to your parents and grandparents. I get so discussed hearing the elderly in my life thinking that the GOP is with them. They vote in great numbers, and they should know what they are voting for. I don't know about the people in your family, but my grandparents pass on every interesting email to all of their friends. Too often, they consist of some BS about what Obama is doing to America.

Bill Clinton threw the poor off the cliff, and suffered no political consequences. While known primarily for ending the Great Society programs, he did get a good start in bringing down the New Deal as well, focusing on the disabled, deeply cutting aid and requiring that those who were found unemployable by reason of significant disability to somehow "find jobs." As a consequence, the disabled became the fastest-growing group of homeless people (these policies finally reversed when President Obama took office). Didn't exactly hear an uproar from the progressive community about this, and in spite of how consistently both Clintons have advocated right wing policies, they remain the darlings of the liberal class. What we've seen is that getting rid of social programs is done incrementally. Clinton "reformed" welfare by ending General Assistance, then moving on to end AFDC. Social Security will be dismantled incrementally as well, starting with Social Security Disability. All it takes is the apathy of the general public. Rather than fight back, we adjust.
