How about we let people work as long as we want and we just make a law that parents are required to support their kids until they are 25? That sounds like a great idea to limit the amount of people in the workforce that you seem to be advocating for. *sigh* The amount of willful economic ignorance in this country is depressing.

I agree heartily that the payroll tax cap for Social Security should be scrapped. Every penny that everyone makes, regardless of the source, should be taxed. With any luck, this would provide enough additional revenue that the retirement age could be lowered. That would get some baby boomers like me out of the workforce and make room for younger people to start their careers. As it is, things don't look too promising for them, and we can hardly expect them to sit around and wait for us to die.

In New Jersey, TANF cash assistance is $192 along with a $50 per month heating credit. This is not quite a "gift."

Medicaid and "food stamps" ($392 per month) is a bit more like it. In order to qualify, your earnings must be less than ~$500 per month.

This is a tremendously complex issue with as many layers as an onion. One point is that as much a liberals try assure themselves that welfare aid for the desperately poor wasn't really wiped out,k few can obtain aid when desperately needed. It isn't clear what, if any, cash benefits exist for this group. As I understand it, some people can obtain a small subsidy if they are working, and if the job that pays so little as to keep them in deep poverty. This keeps them alive while protect the right of corporations to maximize profits by saving on labor costs. There is no entitlement to poverty relief in the US, regardless of need. One is required to work to receive food stamps/Medicaid. In an era following years of massive job outsourcing, when so many people can't find jobs, it would be interesting to research how those with some of the greatest disadvantages find jobs.

[...] OurFuture.org’s Richard Eskow: “The upcoming ‘fiscal cliff’ talks will open up another front in this seemingly endless struggle. Austerity cuts are harming women worldwide. … 4. Cuts to Social Security and Medicare would be especially hard on women. … 5.
