Sara,
I very much enjoy your writing style and particularly the manner in which you present your thoughtful ideas. I have read other articles you wrote that I thoroughly enjoyed, ie: “Why We Have to Go Back to a 40 Hour Week”.

I just finished reading your article on “Fascist America” from 2010 and wanted to make some comments that came to mind.

I agree with your premise that there is a radical element developing in America. However, I wanted to point out that movements do not rise up out of a vacuum. Fundamental movements arise as a reactionary polar response to what is perceived as another radical movement. The question begs to be asked; “why did the Tea Party reaction occurred?” It seems obvious to me that the answer to that question lies plainly in the radical liberal movement simultaneously taking place in America.

I was born at the end of the baby boom generation. For the first three decades of my life I watched the checks and balances originally established in America work pretty well. However, what I have noticed for the last two decades has been a widening of the gaps that have always separated Americans, but yet in an intriguing way, keep us united. We used to have the capacity to compromise, to agree to disagree on certain points. Not so anymore. The disagreements are so adamant that the points of agreement have diminished to but a scant insignificant few.

Again, I point out that nothing occurs in a vacuum. Any radical movement is an opposite reaction. Radical conservatism is a reaction to radical liberalism. In my opinion, this is an unfortunate and frightening scenario. As your article points out, the widening of the gap of agreement, or compromise, set us up for a fanatical response. My fear is that the further Obama and his particular brand of democrats lean to the left, the further the conservative Republicans will lean to the right once they regain power (which they most likely will at some point). Each time the pendulum swings more radically to the left or the right, the more likely at some point the pendulum will become unhinged. When that occurs, God help us all.
Best regards,
Dennis Dodd
